Introduction to Pressure-Sensitive Label Technology

Pressure-sensitive labels (also known as PSLs or self-adhesive labels) are the dominant product decoration format across consumer goods, pharmaceuticals, and industrial packaging. Unlike traditional wet-glue labels, which require liquid adhesives, or heat-shrink sleeves, which rely on steam/hot air tunnels, pressure-sensitive labels adhere to surfaces with the application of light mechanical pressure.

The Anatomy of a Pressure-Sensitive Label

A standard pressure-sensitive label consists of four layered components: 1. **The Face Stock**: The printable surface layer. This can be made of paper, or synthetic plastic films such as polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), or polyester (PET). 2. **The Adhesive**: The chemical compound that forms a bond with the container substrate. Options include permanent acrylics, removable rubber-based formulas, or temperature-resistant variations. 3. **The Release Coating**: A microscopic layer (usually silicone) applied to the liner to allow the label to peel away cleanly without tearing. 4. **The Liner**: The backing sheet (paper or PET film) that carries the label roll through the printing press and the client's automated labeling machine.
